It is a travesty that we pay far more per capita for health care than any other country in the world, and yet nearly one-seventh of all Californians go without any health insurance. Too many Californians remain either underinsured or uninsured. Therefore, we still need to aggressively advance programs that maximize affordable health care coverage until we achieve single-payer health care, which would be the best way to provide all Californians with their right to live healthy lives.
On the national level, I supported efforts by President Obama and the Congress to pass meaningful health care reform and was pleased with the enactment of the Affordable Care Act. I will continue to monitor its implementation in California. We have been far ahead of every other state in the nation on implementation, and I am committed to maintaining that goal.
